About the Safety Net Program

Within the Safety Net Program, our mission is to provide non-legal support, information, referrals and advocacy to individuals, family, friends navigating the Federal Circuit and Family Law Courts of Australia. Our support is:

  • Free
  • Confidential
  • Provided by highly trained volunteers

What We Do

  • Support: We offer a range of support services, including emotional support, information, and referrals, to help individuals navigate difficult circumstances and find the assistance they require.
  • Safety and Well-being: Ensuring you can address your safety needs on your day at court e.g. facilitating access to a safe waiting space and referring you to support workers.
  • Advocacy: We advocate for the rights, promote access to support, inclusivity, safety and well-being of our community members within the legal system, striving to ensure their access to equitable and just processes.
  • Referrals: Provide referrals to legal services, FASS (Family Advocacy Support Service), Legal Aid, Family Violence Services, Family Services, Mental Health Services, Financial Counselling, Material Aid, etc.
  • Community Engagement: We collaborate with various stakeholders, including the courts, law enforcement, and social services, to create a stronger, more resilient community.

Who can access our services?

The Safety Net Program serves a diverse range of court users, family, friends, and guardians, including those who may:

  • Attending Federal Circuit and Family Court in Victoria or Queensland
  • Have safety concerns
  • Be involved in court proceedings
  • Be supporting someone going to Family Court
  • Someone thinking about going to Family Court
  • Require emotional support during challenging times
  • Seeking information and referrals to community services

Eligibility

  • Have a Family court matter in Victoria or Queensland, Australia
  • Over the age of 18 years old
